Questions to Ask About Balance Transfer Cards

Listen to this article

A balance transfer card can give you breathing room to pay down high-interest debt — but only if the terms actually work in your favor. Ask these questions before you apply.

How long is the 0% period, really?

Promotional periods vary widely, from a few months to well over a year. Ask for the exact end date of the introductory rate and what the APR becomes afterward. A long 0% window only helps if you have a realistic plan to pay the balance down before it expires.

What is the transfer fee?

Most balance transfers charge a fee — commonly 3 to 5 percent of the amount moved — which is added to your balance. Do the math: a 5 percent fee on a large transfer can outweigh several months of interest savings. Some cards occasionally waive the fee, but treat that as the exception.

Does the 0% rate apply to new purchases too?

Many balance transfer offers apply the promotional rate only to transferred balances, while new purchases accrue interest at the regular APR from day one — sometimes with no grace period while a promotional balance is outstanding. If you plan to keep using the card, this detail matters enormously.

What credit limit will I get?

You usually do not know your limit until after approval, and the transfer cannot exceed it. If the limit covers only part of your debt, have a plan for the remainder. Also note that most issuers will not let you transfer a balance from another card issued by the same bank.

What happens if I miss a payment?

Ask whether a late payment cancels the promotional rate — with many cards, it does. Set up autopay for at least the minimum, and remember that applying for the card itself typically involves a hard inquiry. The card is a tool for a payoff plan, not a pause button; the questions above tell you whether the tool fits the job.
