What to Know About the 14/45-Day Rate-Shopping Window Before You Act

Listen to this article

You have heard that shopping for loan rates within a short window counts as a single inquiry — but the details matter. The window is not one universal number, and the protection does not cover everything. Here is what to know.

Why the window exists

Credit scoring models are designed to recognize rate shopping: when you apply with several mortgage or auto lenders in a short span, the model understands you are comparing offers for one loan, not seeking many loans. To reflect that, inquiries within the window are generally grouped and treated as a single inquiry for scoring purposes.

The window is 14 to 45 days — depending on the model

There is no single official number. Older scoring models commonly use a 14-day window; newer ones extend it to 30 or 45 days. Since you cannot control which model a given lender uses, treat 14 days as the safe target: do all of your applications for one loan type inside a two-week stretch and you are covered under every common version.

It applies within one loan type

The grouping works for multiple inquiries of the same kind — several mortgage applications, or several auto loan applications. It does not merge a mortgage inquiry with a credit card application and a personal loan application. Those are different credit-seeking events and are generally counted separately.

Inquiries still appear on your reports

An important nuance: the window affects how inquiries are counted in scoring, not whether they appear. Every hard inquiry still shows on your credit reports, and a human underwriter reviewing your file will see all of them. That is normal and expected during rate shopping — underwriters see it every day.

How to use the window well

Do your homework before the clock starts: research lenders, gather documents, and line up your shortlist. Then submit all applications inside your two-week window. Keep notes on each offer so you can compare total costs side by side, and remember that the inquiries’ scoring influence diminishes over time — the window just keeps the shopping trip itself from looking like a spree.
