Questions to Ask About Freezing a Child’s Credit

Listen to this article

Children are prime targets for identity theft because their clean credit histories can be misused for years before anyone notices. Freezing a child’s credit is a powerful preventive step — here are the questions parents ask most.

Can I freeze my child’s credit? Yes. Parents and legal guardians can request a freeze on a minor child’s credit file. If the child has no file — the common case — the bureau creates a record solely for the purpose of freezing it.

Why would a child even have a credit file? Ideally they would not. But a file can exist because of fraud, or because a parent added the child as an authorized user. Either way, it is worth checking before you assume there is nothing there.

How do I check whether my child has a file? You contact each bureau and request a search using the child’s information. If a file exists and you do not recognize the activity on it, treat it as potential fraud and dispute it.

What documents will the bureaus want? Typically the child’s birth certificate and Social Security card or number, your government-issued ID, and proof that you are the parent or legal guardian — such as a birth certificate naming you. Requirements vary slightly by bureau.

Does the process differ from an adult freeze? Often, yes. Child freezes frequently require mailed requests rather than instant online forms, and processing takes longer. Start early and keep copies of everything you send.

What happens when my child turns eighteen? The freeze stays in place until lifted. Before your teen applies for their first card, loan, or apartment, lift the freeze so the application can proceed — and teach them how freezes work so they can manage their own protection going forward.
