A Step-by-Step Checklist for Rebuilding Credit After Identity Theft

Listen to this article

Once the fraudulent accounts are disputed and your files are locked down, a different job begins: rebuilding. This checklist covers the honest, proven path back.

Step 1: Finish the cleanup first. Make sure every fraudulent account, inquiry, and collection has been disputed with the bureaus and furnishers. Rebuilding on top of unresolved fraud is building on sand — verify your reports are clean before moving on.

Step 2: Accept what stays. Accurate negative information — late payments you actually made, legitimate collections — remains for its normal reporting period. No dispute, company, or shortcut removes truthful history. Anyone promising otherwise is selling something.

Step 3: Pay every bill on time. Payment history is the foundation of your credit standing. Set up autopay for at least minimums on every account so a busy month never becomes a missed payment.

Step 4: Keep balances low. High balances relative to your limits weigh down your profile even when you pay on time. Pay down revolving balances steadily and aim to keep utilization comfortably low.

Step 5: Keep old accounts open. The age of your accounts supports your history. Unless an old card charges a fee you cannot justify, leave it open and use it lightly — closing it can shorten your history and raise utilization.

Step 6: Add positive history carefully. A secured card or credit-builder product, used lightly and paid in full, adds on-time payments to your file. One or two well-managed accounts beat a flurry of applications.

Step 7: Monitor and stay protected. Keep your freezes in place, check your free reports regularly, and renew fraud alerts as needed. Rebuilding takes time — protect the progress you earn.

This is general information, not financial advice. If your situation is complex, a nonprofit credit counselor can review your full picture at low or no cost.
