The official place to request free reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion is AnnualCreditReport.com. You can request reports online and the site also provides phone and mail options.
Prepare before you start
Use a secure device and connection. Be ready to answer identity-verification questions. Save or print each report when it becomes available because the browser session may not preserve it for you.
Review in a consistent order
- Names, addresses, employers, and identifying information.
- Accounts you do not recognize.
- Account status, balances, limits, and payment history.
- Collections, public-record information, and inquiries.
- Dates that affect how long information may be reported.
Do not assume the reports match
A lender or collector may report to one bureau, two, or all three. An error on one report may not appear on the others. Keep a separate checklist for each bureau and dispute through the bureau showing the error.
