Unexpected Calls About Unclaimed Funds? FTC Says Treat Them Like Phishing

The FTC warned consumers at the end of March that unclaimed-property calls and texts can be a phishing play for fees, personal information, or both.

The FTC’s March 30, 2026 warning about unclaimed-funds calls is easy to dismiss as a niche scam, but it has a familiar structure: a fake government angle, pressure to act fast, and a request for money or personal information before the consumer has time to verify anything.

Why CRC tracks it

Scams like this often start with a story about a windfall but end with identity theft or account misuse. The FTC noted that these callers may use real-sounding government names, cite specific dollar amounts, and claim a deadline is about to expire. The goal is to pull consumers into a phishing flow before they stop to verify the source.

The most important point

The government will not call or text asking for payment to help you search for unclaimed funds. The FTC reminded consumers that state programs for unclaimed property can be checked through official channels without paying a “processing” fee to a stranger.

CRC takeaway

Whenever money is supposedly waiting for you, the verification process should become slower, not faster. That is especially true if the caller also wants identity details that could later be used in a credit or fraud scheme.
