What to Do If You Still Disagree After a Credit Report Dispute Is Closed

If the bureau says the investigation is complete and you still think the result is wrong, the CFPB says you still have next steps.

A dispute result is not always the end of the story. If a credit reporting company tells you the investigation is complete and you still believe the result is wrong, the CFPB says you still have options. The important thing is to stay organized about what was disputed, what documents were submitted, and how the company answered.

First, read the result carefully

Look at whether the response actually addressed the issue you raised. Sometimes consumers receive a generic result that says an item was “verified” without explaining the supporting records in a meaningful way. That does not automatically mean the company violated the law, but it does mean you may need to compare the result closely to what you originally sent.

What the CFPB says you can still do

The CFPB explains that you may be able to dispute the issue again if you have additional relevant information. You can also submit a complaint to the Bureau if you have already tried working through the normal dispute process and the issue remains unresolved.

Why documentation matters here

Once a dispute is closed, your notes become more important, not less. Keep the original report, your dispute letter, proof of delivery if you have it, and the final result notice. If you send another dispute or a complaint, those records help show that this is not a brand-new issue.
