Common Credit Report Errors to Check Before You File a Dispute

A practical list of the most common credit report errors the CFPB says consumers should check before they send a dispute.

Before you dispute something on a credit report, it helps to be specific about what type of error you are seeing. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau lists several categories of common reporting problems, and that list is useful because it keeps consumers from sending vague disputes that are harder to support with records.

Identity details come first

Start with the basics: your name, address history, birth information, and any accounts that do not belong to you. Mixed-file problems and identity-theft issues can hide in what looks like a small personal-detail mismatch, so those fields are worth checking line by line.

Account status errors matter

The CFPB says consumers should look for closed accounts reported as open, accounts incorrectly reported as late, duplicate debts, and wrong delinquency or payment dates. These are not small details. They can affect how lenders read the whole file.

What to save before you dispute

  • A copy of the report showing the exact item you are disputing
  • Statements, letters, or payment records that support your position
  • A short explanation of what is wrong and what you believe should be corrected

The CFPB says you should send disputes to the credit reporting company and often to the company that furnished the information too. A clean dispute usually starts with a clean explanation of the error type.
