Debt collection validation and credit reporting disputes are often discussed together, but they are not interchangeable. The right step depends on what happened and what you are trying to correct.
Debt collection validation
Federal debt collection rules require a debt collector to provide validation information, generally including the creditor name, amount, and information about dispute rights. Timing matters. A written dispute sent within the stated validation period can require the collector to pause collection of the disputed amount until verification is sent.
Credit report dispute
If a collection account or other item on a credit report is inaccurate or incomplete, dispute the specific reporting error with the bureau and the information furnisher. Include evidence and keep copies. Paying a collection does not automatically erase accurate reporting.
Use the right record
Save the collection notice, envelopes, payment history, settlement letters, credit report pages, dispute submissions, and investigation results. Do not send originals. If the collector is contacting the wrong person or the debt resulted from identity theft, state that clearly and use the applicable identity-theft process.
