FTC: Military Debt Relief Pitches Can Be a Credit Scam

The FTC says scammers are using fake military debt-forgiveness promises to collect fees and personal information from service members and veterans.

If someone promises a special military debt-forgiveness program and wants money upfront, the FTC says that is a major warning sign. Fraudsters often repackage ordinary debt stress into a fake fast-track solution.

How this can affect a credit file

Scam debt-relief companies can drain cash that should have gone to actual creditors. That can leave balances unpaid, accounts further past due, and consumers with even fewer options when they finally reach a legitimate counselor or lender.

What to do before agreeing to help

  • Do not pay upfront fees for debt-relief promises.
  • Ask for all terms in writing before sharing account details.
  • Look for military or veteran financial-counseling resources that do not rely on sales pressure.
  • Check the organization with your state attorney general and other consumer resources first.

The FTC’s July 6, 2026 alert fits squarely into CRC’s mission: avoid any offer that claims to fix debt quickly while making you pay before real work happens.
