Credit repair is not a single product. It is the process of checking the information used to describe your credit history, correcting genuine inaccuracies, and building better current information over time.
Start with all three reports
Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the federally authorized source for free reports. Review identifying information, account ownership, balances, payment history, dates, and collection entries. The three bureaus may not show identical information.
Dispute facts, not consequences
You have the right to dispute information you believe is inaccurate. Identify the exact item, explain what is wrong, include copies of supporting records, and keep proof of what you sent. Accurate, current negative information generally cannot be removed simply because it hurts a score.
Build the part you control
- Pay every bill by its due date.
- Reduce revolving balances when possible.
- Avoid opening several accounts in a short period solely to chase a score.
- Keep statements, dispute results, and correspondence organized.
Watch for illegal promises
The Federal Trade Commission warns against companies that demand advance payment, promise a new credit identity, tell you to dispute information you know is accurate, or guarantee they can remove all negative information. A legitimate provider should explain your rights and the services in writing.
