Questions to Ask About Credit Monitoring Services Before You Sign Up

Listen to this article

After a breach or fraud scare, credit monitoring sounds like the obvious fix. Before you sign up — free or paid — ask these questions so you know what you are actually getting.

What does the service monitor? Some services watch one bureau; others watch all three. Some track the dark web or public records; others only send alerts when new accounts appear on your reports. Know the coverage before you rely on it.

Does monitoring prevent identity theft? No — and this is the most important question. Monitoring detects activity after it happens; it does not block it. A security freeze prevents new-account fraud. Monitoring tells you about it. They are complements, not substitutes.

Should I pay for it? Often you do not need to. Many banks and card issuers offer free monitoring, breaches frequently come with free coverage, and the bureaus themselves offer free tiers. Paid plans add features, but evaluate whether you will actually use them.

What happens when the free trial ends? Breach-provided monitoring typically expires after one or two years, sometimes converting to a paid plan automatically. Mark the end date and decide deliberately — do not drift into a subscription you did not choose.

Will the alerts be useful or just noise? Too many trivial alerts train you to ignore them. Look for services that alert on what matters: new accounts, hard inquiries, address changes, and significant score changes.

Is my data safe with the monitoring company? You are handing a service your most sensitive information. Check its privacy policy, data retention practices, and breach history before enrolling — a monitoring service with sloppy security defeats its own purpose.
