What to Know About ChexSystems Before You Open a New Bank Account

Listen to this article

Most people have heard of the three big credit bureaus, but banks often check a different database before approving your new account: ChexSystems. If you are dealing with fraud — or a surprise account denial — here is what to know.

ChexSystems is a consumer reporting company that tracks checking and savings account history: overdrafts, unpaid fees, suspected fraud, and accounts closed for cause. Banks and credit unions use it to screen new applicants, much like lenders use credit reports.

A negative ChexSystems record can keep you from opening an account even if your credit scores look fine. Unpaid bank fees, an account closed while overdrawn, or a fraud flag can all trigger a denial. If identity theft touched your banking life, a ChexSystems entry may be the reason a new account application failed.

You have the right to a free ChexSystems report every year. Request it directly from ChexSystems, review it like you would a credit report, and look for accounts or activity you do not recognize.

If you find errors or fraud, dispute them. ChexSystems must investigate disputes, and you can add the same documentation — FTC Identity Theft Report, police report, ID — that you use for credit bureau disputes.

If a legitimate negative mark is keeping you out, ask banks about second-chance checking accounts. Many institutions offer them with monthly fees or limits, designed for people rebuilding their banking history.

Bottom line: your credit freeze does not cover ChexSystems. Bank-account reporting is a separate system with separate rights — check it, dispute it, and protect it just like your credit files.
