What to Know About Goodwill Adjustments for Late Payments Before You Act

Listen to this article

A single late payment can linger on your reports for years. A goodwill adjustment — a creditor voluntarily removing or softening that mark — is one of the few ways to address accurate late payments. Here is what to know before you try.

Goodwill only applies to accurate marks

This is not a dispute strategy. A goodwill request concedes the late payment happened and asks for mercy. It works best for isolated lates on otherwise clean accounts.

Your history is your argument

Creditors grant goodwill when the late payment looks out of character: years of on-time payments, one slip during a move, illness, or job change. If late payments are a pattern, goodwill is a hard sell.

The account must be current

Almost no creditor grants goodwill on a delinquent account. Catch up first, then ask.

There is no formal process

Goodwill has no legal framework — no deadlines, no required forms, no appeal rights. It is a customer-service request, handled at the creditor’s discretion. That also means there is no penalty for asking.

Who to contact

Start with the creditor’s customer service or credit-reporting department, but executive offices and dedicated goodwill teams often have more authority. A short, honest, personalized letter beats a template.

What to expect

Many requests are ignored or denied. Some succeed on the second or third try. Allow several weeks per attempt, keep copies of everything, and check your reports after any approval.

What not to do

Do not dispute a late payment as inaccurate while also writing goodwill letters about it — the contradiction undermines both. Pick one approach.

Goodwill adjustments are never guaranteed. This is general information, not financial advice.
