What to Know About Temporary vs Extended Fraud Alerts Before You Choose

Listen to this article

Not all fraud alerts are the same. Choosing between a temporary initial alert and an extended alert comes down to your situation — here is how they compare.

The initial fraud alert lasts one year. Anyone can place one if they suspect they may become a victim of identity theft — you do not need to prove fraud occurred. It is the right choice after a data breach scare or a lost wallet, when you want extra verification on new applications without a full freeze.

The extended fraud alert lasts seven years. It is designed for confirmed victims of identity theft, and it requires an Identity Theft Report — the official document from IdentityTheft.gov. If you have filed that report, the extended alert gives you years of lender-verification protection without annual renewals.

Both types work the same way in practice: when a lender sees the alert, it must take reasonable steps to verify your identity — usually by contacting you at a number you provide — before opening a new account. This adds friction for thieves and a small delay for your legitimate applications.

Placing either alert is free, and contacting one bureau is enough — that bureau notifies the other two. Neither alert affects your credit score.

When should you choose which? Suspected risk but no confirmed fraud: the one-year initial alert, renewed if concerns persist. Confirmed identity theft with an FTC report: the seven-year extended alert. Want the strongest block on new accounts regardless: a security freeze, which you can combine with either alert.

Remember that alerts expire. Mark your calendar a month before an initial alert lapses so you can renew it or reassess — protection that quietly ends is protection you no longer have.
