What to Know About Filing a Police Report for Identity Theft Before You Go

Listen to this article

After identity theft, people often wonder whether the police can help — and whether a report is even worth the trip. Here is what a police report does and does not do, so you go in with the right expectations.

A police report creates an official record that a crime occurred. That record matters because some creditors, debt collectors, and even credit bureaus ask for one before they will close fraudulent accounts or drop collection efforts. It is supporting evidence, not a magic eraser.

What it will not do: launch a full investigation. In most cases, officers take your statement, file the report, and give you a report number. Identity theft cases rarely get detective-level investigation unless the losses are large or part of a bigger pattern. That is normal — the report’s value is as documentation.

Before you go, file your FTC report at IdentityTheft.gov. Bring the printed Identity Theft Report, a government-issued photo ID, proof of your address, and any evidence of the fraud — collection letters, unfamiliar account statements, or your marked-up credit reports.

At the station, be specific. List each fraudulent account, the approximate dates, and the dollar amounts. Ask for the report number and the officer’s name and badge number, and request a copy of the report for your records.

Afterward, use it. Attach the police report number to your disputes with creditors and bureaus, alongside your FTC report. Some companies have fraud affidavit forms that reference it directly.

One more note: you generally file where you live, not where the thief operated. If your local department resists taking the report, politely insist — many states require them to accept identity theft reports from residents.
