A Step-by-Step Checklist for Negotiating a Payment Plan on Charged-off Debt

Listen to this article

When you cannot settle a charged-off debt with one payment, a structured payment plan may still resolve it. Negotiate it carefully with this checklist.

Step 1: Confirm who holds the debt

Original creditor, assigned collector, or debt buyer — negotiate with the current owner and confirm their authority in writing.

Step 2: Know your monthly number

Calculate what you can pay every month without fail, leaving room for essential expenses. A plan you cannot keep is worse than no plan.

Step 3: Ask for the total in writing

Get the full balance, including any interest or fees, stated in writing. Ask whether interest stops accruing during the plan.

Step 4: Negotiate the total, not just the payment

Ask whether they will accept less than the full balance over the plan term. The worst they can say is no — and many will say yes.

Step 5: Lock in the reporting terms

How will the account be reported during the plan? After completion? Get “settled” or “paid” language and a zero-balance commitment in the written agreement.

Step 6: Understand the default clause

What happens if you miss a payment? Some plans reinstate the full balance. Know the penalty before you sign.

Step 7: Get the signed agreement first

Do not make the first payment until you hold a signed agreement covering amount, schedule, reporting, and release.

Step 8: Pay on time, keep every receipt

Set up reminders or autopay from an account you control. Keep every confirmation.

Step 9: Get the release letter and verify reports

After the final payment, request written confirmation that the debt is resolved, then check all three bureau reports for the agreed status and zero balance.

This is general information, not financial advice.
