Questions to Ask About Innovis and Lesser-Known Credit Bureaus

Listen to this article

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion get all the attention, but they are not the only consumer reporting companies. Here is what to ask about the lesser-known bureaus that may hold files on you.

Who is Innovis? Innovis is a fourth major consumer reporting company. It collects similar credit data to the big three, and some lenders pull Innovis reports. It accepts freeze requests and provides free annual reports, just like the bigger bureaus — but many consumers have never heard of it.

What other specialty bureaus exist? Dozens. ChexSystems tracks bank account history. The National Consumer Telecom and Utilities Exchange tracks phone and utility payment history. LexisNexis aggregates public records and insurance data. Tenant screening and employment screening companies maintain their own files too.

Why do these matter for fraud? A thief does not limit themselves to the big three. Fraudulent bank accounts show up at ChexSystems, not Equifax. Utility fraud lands with the telecom exchange. If you only check the big three, you miss entire categories of misuse.

Can I get free reports from them? Yes. Under federal law you can request your file from any consumer reporting company, and each must investigate your disputes. The CFPB maintains a list of these companies with contact information.

Can I freeze the smaller bureaus? Many accept freezes or similar opt-outs — Innovis, for example, offers a security freeze. The process often involves mail rather than instant online forms, so allow extra time.

Bottom line: after identity theft, expand your sweep beyond the big three. Request your specialty-bureau files, dispute fraud wherever you find it, and freeze what can be frozen.
